Residents Speak, We Listen
Supported by public feedback, Pleasant Valley Town Board Passes Good Cause Protections
PLEASANT VALLEY, N.Y. — The Pleasant Valley Town Board adopted the Good Cause Eviction law Monday night led by Democratic Councilmember Meghan Borland.
“Residents spoke. We listened,” Councilmember Borland, who re-introduced the law, said. “This was democracy inaction" with the majority of residents who gave feed back in favor of the law.
This law at its core, requires landlords to provide a legitimate, legally recognized reason – “good cause” – to evict a tenant or refuse to renew a lease. By limiting arbitrary or retaliatory evictions, the law strengthens housing stability, particularly for low and moderate income renters who are most vulnerable to displacement.
"Passing Good Cause Eviction affirms that a significant share of our residents - roughly 25 percent are a valued part of our community," Councilmember Degan said.
Borland pointed to the consistency of public sentiment as a key factor in her decision.
“At the end of the day, this is about listening to our residents, doing what is right and making a decision that reflects their voices."
